1. Fake Fire and Rescue by Blake Butler-- This was by far my favorite submission.

What I’d say: A sick, twisted story that hit all the right notes. And a swipe at dead babies! Wish it was longer — the story, not the dead baby swipe. Anyway, kudos.

2. Homecoming by Bill Brocato
— Liked it.

Freight Train — Eh. Carver — Double eh.

What I’d say — Homecoming is succinct and clever. Then again, maybe it’s short and easy to understand and I’m just dumb. Either way, I liked it.

3. Sri Lanka by Byron D. Howell — Liked it.
History Repeating — Awesome.
My Anthem — Really cool.
Cardboard Home is Mine — Great!
BECOMING ONE WITH YOU -- Very sweet.

Really liked this poet. Everything by him.

What I’d say — It’s hard to compliment poetry without sounding pretentious, so I’ll leave it at -- Well done, Bryon.

For the writers who submitted works that I didn’t like, a short anecdote:

A nurse delivers a newborn to a young couple. The mother cradles the baby in her arms and says, “He has my eyes.” The father gingerly raises the baby in his arms and says, “He has my nose.” A stranger passes and says, “He has my sympathy.” You see, it’s all relative.
